What is a Waste Management Plan?

The building and construction industry is a major contributor to waste, much of it disposed of to landfill. Effective waste minimisation strategies can significantly reduce the amount of waste landfilled. Councils can require developers to submit site waste management plans with their development applications.

A Site Waste Minimisation and Management Plan (SWMMP) outlines measures to minimise and manage waste generated during:

  • demolition
  • construction
  • ongoing use of the site/premises.

In doing so, the SWMMP nominates:

  • volume and type of waste and recyclables to be generated
  • storage and treatment of waste and recyclables on site
  • disposal of residual waste and recyclables
  • operational procedures for ongoing waste management once the development is complete.
